Metallic

Metallic

Metallic is never really out but this fall, it’s easier to find it in more interesting pieces like these intricately patterned silver shorts (or these silver running shorts from Topshop). A metallic shoe will add some serious polish to any outfit and a gold-coated pair of jeans or leggings would be a fun, just-quirky-enough twist for a night out.

For all-out glam, a gold dress or jumpsuit – like those Maria Grachvogel showed in London last winter – would do the trick or, if you’re not quite that bold, some metallic accents – like this matte, gold cross-body bag or a shiny cuff – will look smart.

Embellishment

Embellishment

From rich brocades to jewel-covered clutches, this season you could feasibly deck yourself in head-to-toe ornamentation or, if you’re a little less daring, stick to just a few sparkly touches to punch up your everyday style. Stay away from this trend if you’re shy though: this modern take on baroque glamour will definitely get you noticed.

Trend Report: Such opulent looks in heavy fall fabrics might be a little hard to pull off in the spring and summer so make your buying decisions with that in mind.

Leather

Leather

Designers went beyond the standard bag, belt and shoes this season, using leather in more interesting ways like peplum skirts, long-sleeved dresses, shorts and full-length coats.

If you’re not ready to dive in all the way, it’s easier to incorporate leather into your closet in smaller doses – as a detail on a coat or a frill on a skirt. Or, for a small shot with major drama, try long gloves with a shorter-sleeved coat or pair a an item, like this quilted skirt from Zara, with a cozy sweater or a girly lace top.

Indigo

Indigo

My closet is filled with all kinds of blue but this particular shade of electric, violet-hued blue has long been one of my favorite colors. It’s got a little more visual interest than royal or navy and is a bit spicier than plain purple – making it the perfect addition to your fall wardrobe.

To transition from summer, it goes perfectly with other cools colors like mint and, for fall, it’ll pump up any all-black ensemble.

Burgundy

Burgundy

Wine-inspired hues were all over the fall runways and this year, designers are using it in unexpected ways – whether in top-to-toe looks in shades of plum, bordeaux and merlot or in pieces like leather jackets or boots.

Plus, it’ll work with or in place of all of your neutrals and is classic enough that it won’t look out of place next year. It especially pairs well with bright reds or pinks you might have leftover from summer, or all those chambray and denim shirts you bought last spring.
